Rental Reviews Authentic Middle Age Canal House Monnickendam

Review 12 = A perfect location and property for a visit to Amsterdam

Review 13 = Comfortable, peaceful and relaxing, which helped us to focus on our business needs

Comfortable, peaceful and relaxing, which helped us to focus on our business needs as well as enjoy some downtime. Thank you to Rein for being so kind and informative during the booking process leading to our stay. A big thank you to Ben for going out of his way to ensure we had everything we needed and were comfortable, as well as accommodating our early check-out on a Sunday morning - you are a star :) We will certainly be back and highly recommend the Dutch Buoy!

Review 14 = The house was as advertised: suitable for 6 persons, very comfortable and well-appointed

Our family very much enjoyed the 4 nights we stayed at The Dutch Buoy. The house was as advertised - space most suitable for 6 people with 3 double beds and 2 full bathrooms. Overall very comfortable and well-appointed. Parking was very easy - either in front of the home or just around the corner. The village itself is quiet and humble, with several restaurants and shops. Amsterdam is easily accessible either by bus or car - quite honestly, after spending the day in the big city, it was a relief to return to the small town for a quiet evening. Mayn thanks to Rein for the arrangements and to Ben for the local hospitality.

Review 16 = Delightful stay at The Dutch Buoy, Monnickendam
There are numerous positive aspects of the Dutch Buoy property, but I'll only mention the most notable ones. Firstly, Ben's greeting at the property was very welcoming. Throughout our stay, Ben was accommodating. The Jacuzzi is unique because it is self-drying and has no mold problems. The living room was inviting, and take advantage of the beautiful sunset view. The canal was full of sailboats during our stay, and it was quite the adventure to be there during their Zuiderzee Battle against the Spaniards, which happened in 1573, celebration. The locals all dressed up in period clothing. The beds were very comfortable, and the bathrooms were very nicely equipped. Of course, the bathrobes topped off the entire experience.

Review 17 = Amazing experience!
We had an amazing stay at the Dutch Buoy. From the very beginning the experience was fantastic with great communication from the owner all the way to staying in a 16th canal house 20 minutes north of Amsterdam. The city of Monnickendam and the surrounding area was wonderful and exceeded our expectations. We had so much fun visiting the other smaller surrounding communities that we only visited Amsterdam twice. I would highly recommend this property if you are considering a visit to The Netherlands.

Review 20 = Great place to stay.
It was an amazing experience. We stayed downtown right near a canal. There were several restaurants around walking distance away. It was easy to get transportation into Amsterdam. Gave you an opportunity to see the countryside. The place itself was very comfortable. Ben was there to welcome us and helpful to answer questions we had. We did ask for an early arrival time and it was worked out. Thanks for making our trip a great vacation.

Review 23 = Thank you for your hospitality and use of your beautiful home. It made our family holiday even more perfect.

The home was beautifully appointed. The pictures on line did not do this home justice as it was more beautiful than anticipated. The town and surrounding setting were picturesque and perfect for our stay. A short 5 minute walk will take you to the bus stop where you can go straight into Amsterdam Central in 15 minutes. We are a family of 6 and fit comfortably. I honestly can not say enough about our accommodations they were perfect.

American Review from Jesse, 5 stars, airbnb.com, stayed in The Dutch Buoy from 26. December till 2. January 2023.

Review 24 = The best Airbnb I have ever had the pleasure to stay in.

This apartment certainly lived up to expectations. The view is amazing, and two minutes walk to the harbour where we saw a wonderful misty sunrise over the many beautiful boats. It is the perfect place to come back to after a day in the city. Transport is easy - a ten minute walk to the bus stop then about 15 minutes to Central Station, though it was wise advice from Rein to book an Uber for the first journey when you don’t quite know the route. Really peaceful little town with some nice places to eat. There is a clock which plays a quirky tune every quarter of an hour, but it didn’t keep us awake and all adds to the charm of the place. The apartment is spacious and well equipped. The two bedrooms on the upper floor wouldn’t suit anyone with mobility issues as the open staircase is steep and has no hand rails, but we managed it fine (apart from when we had just run the Amsterdam Half Marathon when we had a few difficulties!!). Also good to be aware for friends sharing that you have to go through each other’s bedrooms to get to the upstairs bathroom or back to the stairs, which all adds to the fun. We hired bikes from Volendam which were delivered to the door and collected the next day. Fabulous ride to Marken, across on the ferry and back via Edam and a cheese farm with tasting options. Beautiful scenery and we had wonderful weather too, which made it an excellent day out. Rein, and his local agents Rita and friends, were all extremely helpful and friendly. We appreciated the bottle of fizz in the fridge (with which we celebrated our Half Marathon achievements) and bowl of fruit. Highly recommend the Dutch Bouy. Probably the best Airbnb I have ever had the pleasure to stay in.

Review 25 = The Dutch Buoy, gorgeous 17th century canal house, 8 kms from Amsterdam.

A beautiful property, superb location and wonderful hosts. Rein, you, your wife and Ben could not have been more accommodating. Going out of your way to help when our luggage disappeared with the Uber driver (which arrived back there next day), the bike ride to the drug store and your beautiful home, all made our stay, perfect! Thank you so much for everything!

Review 27 = whole family loved The Dutch Buoy.

Our whole family loved The Dutch Buoy. The house and Monnickendam were so charming and unique. We really appreciated the fans in the rooms, as we were there during a hot period. The coffee and tea, milk, butter, and toiletry items were also very nice touches that made our stay more comfortable. The concierge Ben was very helpful as well. The bus ride into Amsterdam is so easy once you figure it out, and it was lovely to leave the busy city and come back to Monnickendam after a hectic day.

Review 31 = Fantastic experience.

Fantastic experience- we loved the house and the location. We fit our family of 5 very comfortably! Highly recommend this spot as it is an easy ride into Amsterdam without the hassle of parking. The village has everything you need and great restaurants. We rented e-bikes and rode all around the villages - absolutely beautiful!

Review 32 = Thank you for the tips on what to do in the area.

This is a beautiful house in a beautiful, quaint, historic town. We are fortunate enough to overlap with the annual Jan Haring Festival. So there was a lot of fun and excitement literally outside our front door. 15 minutes bus ride to Amsterdam was a bonus. My family stayed for a week and we had a rental car - it was a great location to explore many of the highlights in Holland. The house was very well equipped for my family of 5.

Review 34 = Centre for our European travels was The Dutch Buoy Monnickendam

Our comment on our 90 nights` stay in The Dutch Buoy is overall, WONDERFUL!! And as European lovers we travelled a lot, mainly by train to Praque, Edinburg, Florence, etc. etc. For non EU guests you should be aware that the lack of ATM’s working with standard US debit cards is very, very confusing. In Monnickendam we eventually found an ATM at the Albert Heijn grocery that would take my US debit card for cash.  We did get euros at the airport (unfortunately from an exchange ATM, ouch).  We learned that all Netherlands banks have done away with their ATM’s. The local Information Centre was not familiar with this issue. We told them of the grocery ATM. The butcher, bakery and Saturday market do not take credit cards, only the Dutch debit card. Public regional bus/metro/train transport is very efficient, cheap and effective! Bus tickets are available in the local NIMO book store (in cash or in Dutch debit card). Parking costs in Amsterdam are excessively high, but in Monnickendam zero!

Review 37 = The house is very comfortable, quiet and of very high quality.

Rein's house is the perfect location to spend enjoyable holidays. Beautifully situated in the centre, directly on the canal. Opposite some very nice restaurants. The house is very comfortable, quiet and of very high quality. It represents the modern and traditional architecture of a typical Dutch home and prevents every comfort you need and want in your holiday. The communication with Rein was very pleasant as well the service of the concierge. We can highly recommend the house.

Review 38 = For really authentic Dutch experience staying at The Dutch Buoy cannot be bettered.

For a really authentic Dutch experience staying at The Dutch Buoy cannot be bettered. Monnickendam is a lovely old town and visually so pleasing to walk about. We really enjoyed our trip- taking in other local towns as we cycled. The house was as good as its description and we would be delighted to recommend it.

There was no problem with parking our car right in front of the house. Thank you very much for a very pleasant time spent with the family in such a nice place.

Review 44 = A wonderful place!

The location alone is beautiful: right on the canal, a few meters to the harbour with restaurants close by. The home itself is lovely - very authentic and at the same time really well appointed, such a pleasure to stay in. Access by public transport to Amsterdam and the local villages turned out to be easy, and our family so enjoyed the choices we could make each day. We’d go back anytime.

Australian Review from Julia, 5 stars, airbnb.com, stayed from 10. till 15. October 2019.

Review 45 = Majestic.

This property was amazing! We were initially hesitant to stay outside of Amsterdam but NOT would regret it one bit. Rein, the property manager and Ben, the host were more than accommodating. They helped us with our "must sees" and our experience in the Netherlands would have been far from what it was by staying only in the City of Amsterdam. It is close to public transport so you are able to get to the city very easily. When you are done with bustle of the city, come home to the cutest old fishing village with tons of bars, restaurants and shops. It truly was the highlight of our trip to the Netherlands!

“We absolutely loved our stay at the Dutch Buoy. The house is beautiful and the location right on the canal is stunning. Monnickendam was so quaint and charming, and it was very easy to get to other places by bus. Ben, the concierge, was very helpful and friendly. We would love to go back!”

“Beautiful house in a lovely location, enjoyed our stay immensely. 3 generations aged 13 to 82. 6 in total. Comfortable beds. And enjoyed the bottle of sparkle on arrival. Friday market day was most enjoyable, locals lovely and friendly. Local bus service very close by and easy to get around. Lots of great places to eat and an ice cream parlour just across the bridge, I think we worked our way through most of the flavours. A busy little town well worth a visit.”

Review 49 = Introduction to the regional allure of the Netherlands. And easy access into Amsterdam Central made this the best experience we could have asked for.

The 17th Century Canal home is perfection. The surrounding canal village, just opposite the canal home exceeds the most picturesque impression of what we could have imagined life on the canals to be. The home itself is superb, 3 generous bedrooms, beautiful and stylish furnishing, decent sized kitchen and a view to die for (if you're into seeing the daily life of the local villagers in the most quaint fishing village), this is the place for you. We had a different agenda to most travellers, and were using the AirBnB as a four week stop over before moving into our permanent home in Amsterdam having relocated from Australia just four weeks ago. Rein was a perfect and welcoming host in the lead up to the booking and our arrival, whereas Ben was impeccable in his care, advice and general sense of hosting. We cannot recommend this property highly enough, it was so perfect matched only by the beautiful blue sky days of the Netherlands summer! Thanks Rein and Ben!

Excellent location just a few miles from downtown Amsterdam with excellent public transit available into the city. Beautiful accommodation right on a canal. Very responsive owner with a wealth of information provided in advance of arrival. Easy check-in, check-out with Ben who was also available for questions throughout our stay. Lots of amenities in the house. Grocery store a short walk. Restaurants all around. Highly recommend!!

Review 51 =  Best place to stay imaginable!

To celebrate our 30th Anniversary and my wife’s retirement, we rented the unique Dutch Buoy with two of our favorite cousins. It was the best place imaginable from which to visit Amsterdam, Delft, Haarlem, and other beautiful places. The little town of Monnickendam is delightful....friendly people, great restaurants, interesting shops, and of course, the charming harbor. The views from the Dutch Buoy are like postcards. I cannot recommend this place enough. Five days was not enough and we hope to visit again.

Review 54 = A stylish well-equipped home away from home with gorgeous views.

My family of 4 adults loved our stay at the Dutch Buoy. The views on the canal were glorious and added to the Dutch experience, as did the beautiful walk to and from the bus stop on our way to Amsterdam city, a short distance away. The cottages, sail boats and cobbled stone streets are a smaller version of the city of Amsterdam but so much quieter and cosier. We very much looked forward to these picturesque walks each day and later explored the surrounding area by foot. Amazing! It is a must to see! We immediately felt at home at the spacious Dutch Buoy with its beautiful, stylish, decore, quiet surrounds and extremely comfortable beds. The well-equipped beautiful kitchen allowed us to relax and cook dinners and have quality family time. The lounge the dining area have a beautiful view of the canal and surrounding homes, just like a living postcard which we enjoyed each day. The two bathrooms were an added advantage for us. The bathrobes were a touch of luxury and so very thoughtful! We had everything we could possibly need and more! There are good restaurants and convenience stores close by. We felt fortunate to have discovered this beautiful haven, close to the centre of Amsterdam yet so quiet and serene! It allowed us to explore the city by day and relax in such an picturesque setting in the evening. Both Rein and Ben were so helpful and instantly made us feel at home. We highly recommend the Dutch Buoy. It was a magical experience that our family will always hold close to our hearts!

Review 56 = The Dutch Buoy spotless and fully furnished. Choose stay in Monnickendam instead of the City of Amsterdam!

This was our first time in Amsterdam. Rein and his concierge Ben were such great hosts!

The place was spotless and fully furnished. They provided details about local attractions and stuff to do in Amsterdam. Monnickendam is an amazing little town! Lots to see and do during the day and it pretty much closes down at 6pm so it’s quiet after dark. Very relaxing. Thanks to Rein and Ben for a wonder stay!

To our hosts,

This was the first time travelling to this part of the world.

Needless to say, we did not know what to expect.

We were pleasantly surprised!

Your home has so many amazing qualities including an amazing view and an excellent location.

At first our focus was seeing and experiencing the City of Amsterdam.

But as the days went by we felt more drawn to your quaint and picturesque town and ended up spending quite a bit of time here.

Ben was an excellent concierge. Made us feel right at home!

We definitely feel blessed to have been able to stay here!

Review 65 = Review on www.airbnb.com (24. October 2018): 5 Stars

We had a wonderful stay at the Dutch Buoy. It is a beautiful, characterful place and made for a very authentic Dutch experience! Monnickendam is a lovely town and it is a very good base for travelling into Amsterdam.

Review 66 = Accommodation with very classy and artistic ornaments and furniture.

The accommodation was amazing with very classy and artistic ornaments and furniture. The apartment was extremely clean and well presented and the beds were the most comfy ever. We were checked in and out by the concierge Ben, who was very helpful and professional. The only downside was that we didn't get to spend enough time in the apartment as we were out and about exploring - but this means that we will have to visit again :) The area of Monnikendam is absolutely stunning and quaint with beautiful bars and restaurants. I would not hesitate to recommend this beautiful house to anyone. You would not be disappointed.

Canal (houses) in Monnickendam
The Dutch Buoy, Amsterdam Metropolitan Area

Review 68 = An Awesome Experience.

The Dutch Buoy in Monnickendam made our five days in the Netherlands an absolute dream! Rein Willemsen and his wife were there to greet us with great hospitality! Ben, the concierge, was most pleasant and helpful. If the photos seem too picturesque to be true, be assured that The Dutch Buoy, the immediate area around the canal and the entire village of Monnickendam are better than advertised! With the use of the extra bedroom, The Dutch Buoy accommodated our family of two couples and one individual very well. It is beautiful, comfortable, a perfect blend of modern and historic, and in perfect working order. With the French doors on the upper levels open to the village, the view and the sounds are inspiring! The home is situated perfectly in the village. We walked across the bridge to restaurants and around the corner to morning coffee and pastries. The grocery store is a five minute walk, bike rentals around the corner, and pleasant people everywhere. A short walk to the bus, transfer to the train, and we were at Amsterdam's Central Station in 20 minutes. We felt it was so worth being out of the city for relaxation and the village experience. It was extraordinarily hot in early August 2018 (in most of Europe!) and a couple of extra fans would have been useful for the bedrooms. I'm sure this is not a problem the majority of the year and when August temperatures are more typical. The kitchen held plenty of coffee for our stay, but a few more kitchen essentials such as salt and pepper, a few spices, hand dish washing soap would have been nice as we like to cook. (Perhaps we should have just asked Ben!) The entire experience, starting with the ease of communicating with Rein, was something we will never forget. In fact, I hope to return and spend more time at The Dutch Buoy and Monnickendam!

Review 71 = The first recommendation for staying in Amsterdam - don`t stay in the City!
“The first recommendation for staying in Amsterdam - don't stay in the city! There is so much beauty and history outside of the city, and the Dutch Bouy house was the perfect place for our stay. Located in a picturesque fishing village north of Amsterdam, the house sits on a canal right out of a Dutch Master's painting. Sailing ships and fishing boats lay just outside the front door. Across the canal, several outstanding cafes are available. Around the corner, several bakeries offer you some examples of the spectacular bread and baked goods available in Holland. On Saturday, a locals market springs up from nothing with fresh vegetables, fruit, cheese, butter and more. Honestly, if you stayed here and never left the village, you would have an outstanding stay. The house was spotless and sported some very nice sculptures. The kitchen was modern and especially spacious for Europe. The bathrooms had top end multi-head showers and jetted tubs. Parking is available on the street directly in front of the house and we never had to move more than a few spaces from the front door. The trip into the city takes 20-40 minutes depending on which end you want to visit. The best way to travel to Amsterdam is by the outstanding bus system, which the concierge will educate you on when checking in. I very much want to return to the Dutch Bouy and just stay in the town, enjoying the company of the fantastic people we met. ”

Review 72 = Guests with children enjoyed their stay in the Dutch Buoy, because of the beach at the Gouwzee (a 13 minutes`walk); because of the playground (a 10 minutes`walk); because of silent going rental boats discovering Waterland; because of a ancient rental barge with captain sailing across IJsselmeer; and because of rental bikes cycling the triangle Marken-Volendam-Edam (23 kilometers). Review 73 = Brilliant Holiday.

We had an amazing stay in Monnickendam.

The house is a delight, beautifully furnished with everything you need, in a perfect position and with very comfy beds. The bakery, delicatessen, bike hire shop, cafes, restaurants and ice cream shop are all within about a minute's walk away. It is a safe and friendly town. Our children were fine exploring on their own as we could keep and eye on them from the balcony and we knew they would be safe. There was so much to do (too much).

We spent time doing many of the sites in Amsterdam but also explored other areas outside the city with windmills, cheese-making, clog-making, bike rides, beaches and ferry trips. We had thought we wouldn't hire a car but changed our minds last minute and in hindsight are very glad we did. It opened up many more opportunities. Also, the bus into Amsterdam wasn't quite as easy as we had hoped.

Our hosts were so accommodating, helpful, fun and friendly and we were also very well looked after by the concierge.

We would definitely recommend this trip and hope to go back again.

Review 74 = A True Home Away from Home.

My experience at The Dutch Buoy House was amazing. The small village house on the canal was serene. The view from the living window will take your breathe away. Me and a few friends came to Amsterdam to celebrate a birthday and to take in all that Amsterdam has to offer and it was amazing.

The canal house itself was just beautiful, the artwork and decor was amazing, the house was spotless. The beds were comfortable, The kitchen had everything you needed to cook if you wanted too. We thought we would be in Amsterdam partying but because the house was so relaxing we found ourselves coming home after taking in the tourist sites and having late night chats while taking in the views. Rein and Ben was so hospitable and welcoming. They greeted us at the door during our arrival and was very helpful about what we needed to know to get around and have a good time. They were also available if we needed them for anything.

The canal house was easily accessible to central Amsterdam only a 20 minute ride on the bus which had 3 different bus route options to get there. You could travel back and fourth with no problem. The village itself was quiet and peaceful. Everyone in the town was very nice and welcoming. The grocery store was within walking distance (the fruit was fresh as it could be). There were a number of restaurants and bakeries nearby for your eating pleasures.
Although we were only there for a short time we truly enjoyed our stay. It really felt like home and I would not only rent this place again but I would recommend anyone who is thinking of renting this place to go for it. You won't be disappointed.

We highly recommend Dutch Buoy.... a true gem.

Review 77 = We chose this property, because it had been beautifully decorated with good style and furniture. And because of a wider staircase.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful home.
We had previously stayed in the centre of Amsterdam and was concerned at being a little away but this far exceeded our previous visit and so convenient to get into Amsterdam central if you need to while being able to stay canal side in the most beautiful tranquil Village with such a lovely ambiance.

We chose this property as it looked like it had been beautifully decorated with good style and furniture.

It was just as expected when we got there.

The second reason was a good staircase that led to the first floor.

The staircases had much wider steps that in previous accommodations, narrow stepped staircases seem to be the quite the norm in Holland and as we were taking my mother in law we were looking for a wider staircase and the Dutch Buoy fulfilled this criteria beautifully.

This property has been so thoughtfully renovated to such a lovely standard.

We really enjoyed our stay here and given the chance would stay again.

Everything you need is local, a lovely selection of restaurants, a bakery and a well stocked butcher shop. All within walking distance.

Such a lovely historic village to walk around. We parked outside the house by the canal and parking in the area was easy.

The Saturday food market was a pleasure to stroll along.

What really made our holiday was the fabulous windows with the balcony which opened to let a little on the canal life into the home.

It was absolutely stunning.

The concierge was very local and on hand for any questions.

We looked at lots of properties and are so pleased we choose this house for our visit.

If you choose this house I am sure you will be as pleased with your choice as we were".

Review 86 = Beautiful, artistic, wonderfully located!!
We really have thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Dutch Buoy in Monnickendam, and found the accommodation exactly as described.
This delightful and historical house, has been appointed to a very high standard with many interesting and charming interior design features.
The house itself is beautifully situated in the centre of Monnickendam with a wonderful view across the canal and the traditional Dutch sailing barges that moor alongside.
The owners of the Dutch Boy have been extremely welcoming and thoughtful and the concierge service a bonus, always helpful when called upon.
We could not recommend this accommodation more highly.

Review 87 = Great house - great location.
"For anyone wanting a spotless, modern furnished house near Amsterdam but in a picturesque quaint village, this is ideal.
The owners are incredibly helpful and friendly, as is the concierge who lives right across the canal.
The kitchen has everything you need for eating "in."
The beds are very comfortable, too.
The town has a small supermarket, bakeries with good breads, a delI and some excellent restaurants all within walking distance.
The view from the living room is very pretty - the canal with its boats and a church with the steeple lit at night.
Getting to nearby towns such as Volendam, Marken, and Edam is a snap, and with the A10 ring road that's 10 minutes away, you can get to all tourist sites easily.
We highly recommend Dutch Buoy".

Short Origin of Waterland, Region North Amsterdam

Short Origin of Waterland in The Edge of The World, How the North Sea Made Us Who We Are (Michael Pye, 2015):

“Human beings started to quit the North Sea coast in the tenth century and they moved inland to the peat zone. The domes and cushions of peat, standing four meters proud of the bog itself, looked like the terpen, the kind of hillocks which has used as refuges before. A century of drought made the bogs seem almost accessible, and if drought could do that, man could do better. All it took was ditches and canals to drain off the water from the high peat domes to the pools that pockmarked the low bog, and you can dig a ditch with the tools any peasant owns: no new technology required. Once drained, the land could be farmed. All the sodden peat in Waterland, which is just north of Amsterdam, became land for farming in this way. …………The town of Medemblik sat in Waterland on the side of the Almere Lake. It was a transit town for freight coming from the Rhine and heading to the North Sea on its way to Scandinavia and England. ………. The sea broke into the lake and turned it brackish and tidal: what was used to be called the Zuider Zee……….. Between 1100 and 1300 most of the Zuider Zee was lined with dikes to stop the land washing away……… The Dutch already had the reputation for managing water …… “free ground with free people” ….. Peat-mining became an industry: for fuel and breweries from Amsterdam to Antwerp. The towns had ruined the peat grounds with their appetite for fuel and now the fact that the ground was spoiled led to the building of dams and the new towns around them: towns like Amsterdam and Monnickendam.

North of Amsterdam after  the Romans retreated the North Sea areas:
First the Frisians (650-900 CE) developed these peat zones, building on domes and cushions (= terpen) their villages. Using their flat-bottomed boats – look at the picture in front of The Dutch Buoy – to trade and spreading the use of money. Once drained, all sodden peat, became land for farming. Medemblik became transit town for freight from the Rhine to Scandinavia and England. The sea broke into the lake and turned it brackish and tidal: what was used to be called the Zuider Zee.

Then the Vikings (800-1200 CE) came to rob & trade. Between 1100-1300 most of the Zuider Zee was lined with dikes. The Dutch already had the reputation for managing water: “free ground with free people”. Peat-mining became an industry: for fuel and breweries from Amsterdam to Antwerp. The towns had ruined the peat grounds with their appetite for fuel. Now the ground was spoiled led to the building of dams and towns like Amsterdam and Monnickendam.

Then Hansa towns (1250-1550 CE), a cartel between Hamburg, Lubeck, Cologne, York, London and Edinburgh, banded together to keep their ships safe, made sure they were well treated in foreign ports. Around 1550 Hansa towns deteriorated.

Then Amsterdam (1550-1650 CE) became the (physical) stock market for Atlantic & Pacific trade. The golden age of Amsterdam is beginning: the art, the riches, the great fleets and the complex markets in anything from paper, grain, species, slaves. Power became a matter of show and glitz as well as armies and diplomacy, soft power perhaps but essential when a ruler is surrounded by disorderly, independent towns and dependent on big merchant enterprises".
